Pitfalls and Problems: Utilizing Moodle

Difficulties with the utilization of Moodle, generally fall within two categories:
1) system and technology application errors
System Errors: Moodle is not always utilized with a dependable server. This can at times limit access to the program as well as slow down utilization of the program. Since it is utilized by different servers, there is not uniformity. Some servers have more errors than others and more capacity to process information reliably. At times, the system may crash and one can lose whatever work has not been saved.

Screen Size: Moodle can fluctuate for little apparent reason the size of the screen. At times, the screen may be excessively large forcing one to scroll across the screen to display all of the page information. At other times, the page is excessively small and the information is hard to see.

Utilization of Cookies: Moodle utilizes cookies in order to maintain login information. However, information form cookies is not shared with any other sites.
2)
User Errors: Moodle requires practice. Though it offers tutorials, one must possess a certain amount of technological fluency to navigate and utilize many of its features. It can be time consuming for an individual that is not familiar with the technology.
Class Management and online behavior: If one uses Moodle for classroom interaction, it requires the time of a professional to monitor the “classroom behavior.” Like any classroom, classroom management skills must be developed and rules and procedures must be implemented and enforced to ensure a truly welcoming collaborative space. This requires time!
Inequity of access: Not all students have access to computers at home. This means that many will not be able to participate as easily in assignments that incorporate Moodle nor will all have access to the wealth of resources found there.
